HOW WE WORK

Start with the challenge.

You don’t need to arrive with a finished plan or a perfectly defined solution.

Toolbox Learning & Innovation works alongside organizations to understand what’s happening, identify what’s possible, and design learning experiences, programs, pathways, and environments that work for the people they serve.

You don’t need to have all the answers.

Sometimes the work begins with an idea.

Sometimes it begins with a program that isn’t working as well as it could, a new audience you want to reach, technology that’s changing faster than you can respond, a learning space that needs to evolve, or an opportunity you aren’t quite sure how to build around.

We start by understanding what you’re trying to do and why it matters—not by arriving with a predetermined solution.

The work should fit the people, the purpose, and the place.

OUR PROCESS

A process designed to move from understanding to action.

EEvery project is different, but the way we approach the work is grounded in five connected practices. They give the work structure without forcing every challenge into the same solution.

01 — LISTEN

Understand before designing.

We begin with the people closest to the work. We listen, ask questions, examine what’s already happening, and learn where the opportunities, challenges, and gaps actually are.

Depending on the work, that might include conversations with staff, learners, participants, educators, leadership, or community members; reviewing existing programs and materials; observing how people use a space or technology; and understanding the systems surrounding the experience.

The goal: understand what’s happening and what matters most.

02 — IMAGINE

Explore what could be possible.

Once we understand the challenge, we create room to think differently.

We explore ideas, approaches, technologies, experiences, partnerships, and possibilities—without assuming that the way something has always been done is the way it needs to work next.

The goal: identify possibilities worth pursuing.

03 — DESIGN

Turn possibility into a thoughtful plan.

Ideas become useful when they can be translated into something people can experience, use, or put into practice.

We shape the learning, program, pathway, environment, or strategy around the people who will actually use it—connecting goals with practical decisions about content, technology, participation, accessibility, resources, and implementation.

The goal: create something purposeful and achievable.

04 — BUILD

Move from plan to practice.

Depending on the project, Toolbox may help develop learning experiences, workshops, activities, program structures, facilitator materials, technology plans, media experiences, implementation tools, or other resources needed to bring the work to life.

We can build alongside your team rather than simply handing over a recommendation.

The goal: create something people can actually use.

05 — STRENGTHEN

Learn from what happens next.

Launching something isn’t necessarily the end of the work.

We can help organizations understand what’s working, what participants are experiencing, what needs to change, and where there may be room to grow. That may mean refining an experience, strengthening internal capacity, supporting facilitators, documenting the work, or helping a successful idea evolve.

The goal: build the capacity for the work to continue.

WAYS WE CAN WORK TOGETHER

Different challenges need different kinds of support.

Some organizations need help understanding what’s getting in the way. Others have a strong idea and need help turning it into something real. Sometimes the work is already underway and needs another perspective, additional capacity, or support to grow.

READY WHEN YOU ARE

You don’t need to know exactly what you need.

You may have a challenge you’re trying to understand, an idea you want to develop, a program that needs to evolve, or simply a sense that something could work better.

That’s enough to start a conversation.
