Our Story

Long before Toolbox had a name.

It Started With My Father’s Toolbox

Before Toolbox became a business, there was my father’s toolbox.

Growing up, that toolbox represented more than a collection of things used to build or repair something. It represented resourcefulness—the belief that when something needed to be figured out, you could learn, adapt, find the right tool, and get to work.

My father’s resilience, curiosity, and forward-thinking approach shaped the way I learned to navigate challenges and opportunities. Over time, the toolbox became a metaphor for something much bigger: the knowledge, skills, creativity, relationships, and confidence we carry with us.

That idea has remained at the heart of Toolbox ever since.

Toolbox is built on a simple belief: different challenges require different tools. Understand what you’re trying to make possible, bring together the right people, tools, ideas, and strategy and build from there.

From Creative Beginnings to Something Bigger

In 2007, I founded Toolbox Entertainment, bringing that philosophy into work rooted in media, production, creativity, and storytelling.

But the work kept evolving.

Years spent working across community media, education, technology, nonprofit leadership, professional learning, program development, and creative environments revealed something important: the tools may change, but the need to learn, adapt, create, and move forward does not.

People and organizations were navigating new technologies, new expectations, new opportunities, and new ways of learning, communicating, and connecting.

Toolbox evolved alongside that work.

One Toolbox. Three practices.

Toolbox Entertainment

Where creativity connects people.
Media, storytelling, production, creative coaching, and artistic expression.

Toolbox Learning & Innovation

Where people learn, create, and grow.
Learning experiences, programs, pathways, professional learning, digital and media literacy, creative technology, and environments designed around how people learn today.

Toolbox Strategic

Where organizations build what’s next.
Strategy, organizational transformation, systems, operations, leadership, technology, and practical solutions that help organizations move from ideas to implementation.

Different areas of practice. One shared philosophy: the right people, the right tools, and the right strategy.

Built From Experience. Driven by Possibility.

My career has never fit neatly into one box—and neither has Toolbox.

For more than 30 years, my work has moved across media, entertainment, education, technology, community and nonprofit leadership, program development, professional learning, and the design of spaces where people learn and create. Along the way, I’ve built programs and partnerships, taught and mentored young people and adults, introduced new technologies, designed media and learning environments, worked with artists and creative teams, and led organizations through growth and change.

Those experiences have taken me from production studios and classrooms to community organizations, concert venues, boardrooms, and places around the world. Each environment has taught me something different about people—how we learn, communicate, create, adapt, solve problems, and experience the world around us.

At first glance, those may seem like very different kinds of work. To me, they have always been connected.

Whether I’m helping an artist bring an experience to an audience, helping a young person discover their voice, working with educators to rethink learning, designing a media environment, introducing technology into an organization, or helping a team navigate change, I tend to begin in the same place:

What are we trying to make possible? What’s getting in the way? Who needs to be part of it? And which tools, ideas, or strategies might help us move forward?

I didn’t build my career by staying within the boundaries of a single industry or job description. I followed problems worth solving, ideas worth exploring, people worth learning from, and opportunities to build something better.

Along the way, I learned to connect things that are often treated separately: learning and technology, creativity and strategy, storytelling and experience, people and systems.

That perspective is part of what Toolbox brings to every engagement. We don’t begin with a predetermined answer or try to fit every challenge into the same solution. We look at the whole picture, bring together the right people, tools, and perspectives, and build from there.

One of Toolbox’s greatest strengths is seeing connections others might miss—and bringing the right people, tools, and perspectives together to make something possible.

What Hasn’t Changed

Technology changes. Organizations change. The ways we teach, learn, communicate, and work continue to change.

What hasn’t changed is our belief in what people can learn, create, solve, and make possible.

Toolbox brings together creativity, technology, learning, strategy, and human-centered thinking to help people and organizations navigate change with greater confidence and possibility.

Because sometimes what changes everything isn’t having all the answers. It’s having the right tools to begin.
